My friend @candicemandrews, coined this term WWPT- (What Will People Think) and it hit me like a ton of bricks. Why? Because I suffered from this syndrome for years….I always sought validation from others. I was scared to take chances on myself for fear of what others will think. I didn’t want to be excluded for thinking differently or being different.
Then one day I just got fed-up. I realized that I was in cycles of being burnt-out, overworked, feeling unappreciated and bitter. I remember reading a quote from the late and great Dr. Myles Munroe- “we were born to be deployed, not employed.” 🤯God was awakening something in me. I had to make a change. I had to do some soul searching. I had to go through a process of learning, unlearning and recreating.
We need to break free from WWPT syndrome!
Here’s a synopsis of my process:
👉🏽Understand who and whose you are!
…I had to build a closer relationship with God because what He thinks of me is what matters MOST! In this self-(re)discovery; I had to quiet my mind, journal and pray (by the way, this is a continous process). I also sought wise counsel through coaches and surrounded myself around persons who uplifted me and supported my growth (can’t be an eagle hanging around pigeons according to @alannasandy_)
👉🏽Establish your values!
…When I understood who I was (am), I became clearer on my values. My values became my barometer. It became my guide to live a more meaningful life– GUILT-FREE & UNAPOLOGETICALLY! I kid you not, this helped me to say NO to others and prioritize myself! It was no more WWPT, it was all about ME 😎
👉🏽Continuously GROW
…Then I continued to GROW and SHARE! As I mentioned, the process is continuous! In this journey I continue to sharpen my skills 💪. I learnt that my only ‘competition’ was yesterday’s version of myself.
To block out the noise of others, you must be focused on building yourself …and when you learn and grow, you SHARE (just as what I’m doing now!)
